Trusted Intermediaries

Different organizations, including those that represent VIPs, engage in activities that facilitate access to creative works in accessible formats, e.g., Braille, audio books, etc. These intermediary activities aim to provide VIPs with the same opportunities for access to culture, information and knowledge that are enjoyed by sighted people. For intermediaries to function, relationships based on trust are needed among rightholders and intermediary institutions.

In copyright terms, trusted intermediaries apply clear sharing policies to ensure that master copies of works adapted under special arrangements or under copyright exceptions are used only for the contractually-agreed purpose or as provided by exceptions.  Development of trusted intermediaries has been widely accepted as a crucial element within the stakeholders’ platform organized by WIPO.
