Current Status
The project is now in its second year and has been progressing well.
The focus of work is to develop best practice guidelines for publishers to follow in their production process and where appropriate to integrate existing standards (including ONIX, electronic publication (ePUB) and DAISY) into mainstream digital publishing in ways that enhance these best practices. The outputs have been designed to be used by publishers to produce accessible digital materials in all parts of the world.
The main deliverables of the project so far include, inter alias, the guidelines document entitled "Accessible Publishing, Best Practice Guidelines for Publishers" highlighting issues for publishing accessible books, the ePUB 3 specification incorporating accessibility requirements for producing digital accessible books; and the DAISY Pipeline 2 a tool set facilitating the conversion of materials from normal print to accessible formats. All of above are being adopted by the publishing industry, standardization bodies and the VIP community.
